How to Get the Green Tick on WhatsApp in the UAE
The green tick on WhatsApp is Meta's Official Business Account badge, and it cannot be bought. You apply through a Business Solution Provider once your number is live on the WhatsApp Business API and your Meta Business account is verified. Meta then decides on brand notability, charges nothing either way, and gives nobody a guarantee.
The questions UAE owners ask first
What is the green tick on WhatsApp?
It is the Official Business Account badge. Meta gives it to a business account it considers notable. On your customer's phone it shows as a small green tick beside your business name.
It is a signal of identity, not of quality. It does not mean Meta has checked your prices, your service or your licence category. It means Meta accepts that this number belongs to the brand it claims to be.
The badge is only available to numbers running on the WhatsApp Business API. The free WhatsApp Business app that many Sharjah shops use cannot receive it. That is the real difference between the app and the API: the app is a better version of WhatsApp on one phone, the API is a business system that several people can answer from.
How do you verify a WhatsApp Business account?
Two different things get called verification, and mixing them up wastes weeks.
The first is Meta Business verification. You submit your trade licence, your registered address and a contact that matches, inside Meta Business Manager. This is compulsory groundwork and most businesses clear it.
The second is the Official Business Account badge, which is the green tick. It is a separate decision, made on notability, and most applications do not clear it. You cannot apply for the badge until the first one is done.
Is the green tick free?
Meta charges nothing for the badge. There is no application fee, no fast lane and no paid tier that improves your odds. If an agency in Dubai quotes a fee for a guaranteed green tick, they are charging for a decision they do not control.
What costs money is the platform underneath it. Your number has to sit on the WhatsApp Business API, which means a provider plan and Meta's per-message charges. Zappio Standard in the UAE is AED 231/month on a yearly term, or AED 289/month billed quarterly. AED plans are invoiced from India as a zero-rated export, so no Indian GST is added, and taxes in your own country are not included. The full plan comparison sits on pricing.
How long does the green tick take?
Split the clock in two.
The part you control is quick. Getting your number onto the API takes about 24 hours once your documents are in. Meta Business verification, where you upload the trade licence and prove the address, usually takes a few working days.
The part Meta controls has no published deadline. Some applications are decided quickly and some sit for weeks. Do not promise your team a launch date that depends on the badge arriving. If Meta declines, a fresh attempt is possible after a waiting period, and we will tell you when that window opens.
Why do green tick applications get rejected?
Rejection is the normal outcome, not the exception. The usual causes:
- Not notable enough. Meta looks for coverage of your brand in news sources it counts. Your own website, your adverts and your paid press releases do not count. A Deira trading company can turn over millions and still fail this test.
- Business verification incomplete. The badge is not considered until the Meta Business account itself is verified.
- Name mismatch. The display name you asked for does not match the trade licence or the name the public knows you by.
- The number is not on the API. A number still running the free WhatsApp Business app is not eligible.
- Poor account health. A number with a low quality rating, recent blocks or a history of unsolicited messages is a weak candidate.
- Restricted category. Some business categories cannot hold an Official Business Account at all.
Notability does most of the damage. It is the one criterion you cannot fix in a week.
Can you apply for the green tick without a provider?
Not in any practical sense. The request is raised inside the WhatsApp Manager of a verified Meta Business account that already owns an API number. Getting a number there without a Business Solution Provider means building against Meta's Cloud API yourself, with a developer app and a webhook endpoint you host.
That is developer work. An owner-operator running a car showroom in Sharjah is not going to do it between test drives. A provider handles the onboarding, the display name request and the badge submission.
There is no self-serve signup at Zappio. You send your details on start, we get the number live, and the badge application follows once verification clears.
Green tick, blue tick and the two blue ticks
"WhatsApp blue tick" is searched in the UAE about as often as some green tick terms, and it means two different things.
Some people mean the verification badge they know from other platforms, where verified accounts carry a blue tick. On WhatsApp that badge is green, not blue, and it is the Official Business Account described above. Same idea, different colour. If that is what you came for, everything above applies.
Others mean the ticks inside a chat. One grey tick means the message left your phone. Two grey ticks mean it reached the recipient's device. Two blue ticks mean it was opened. Any recipient can switch read receipts off, so a message sitting on two grey ticks has not necessarily been ignored. On the API those same delivered and read events feed your campaign reports, and broadcasts covers how that reporting works.
What you need before you apply
- A trade licence. Mainland or free zone, in the name you want customers to see.
- A number you can free up. If it currently runs the WhatsApp Business app, that account must be removed before migration, and you must be able to receive the one-time code sent to it.
- A verified Meta Business account. Licence, registered address and a contactable phone or domain that agree with one another.
- A live website on your own domain. With an email address at that domain, not a free mailbox.
- Independent coverage. Anything written about your brand by someone you did not pay.
Gather these before the application rather than during it. Half the delay in a typical green tick attempt is a document nobody can find.
What the badge changes, and what it does not
The green tick does not reduce what you pay Meta per message. UAE rates are identical with or without it: about eighteen fils for a marketing message until 30 September 2026, about twenty-one fils from 1 October 2026, and about six fils for a utility message throughout. From 1 October 2026 Meta also charges for service messages, your own non-template replies, once you pass 1,000 delivered per business phone number in a month. The rate card lives on WhatsApp API pricing.
It does not raise delivery rates, stop people blocking you, or rescue a number that sends messages nobody asked for. Meta's quality rating is driven by how recipients react, and a badge does not soften that.
What it changes is the half second before somebody replies. Here is an illustration, not a measured case. A Jumeirah clinic sends an appointment reminder at 9 a.m. on a Tuesday. The patient never saved the number. A badge beside the name is the difference between reading the message and reporting it as spam.
While Meta is deciding
The badge is the last thing to arrive and the smallest of your problems. The things that actually move replies should be running long before it:
- Answers outside your hours. Many UAE offices work Monday to Friday, while shops and showrooms trade through Saturday. WhatsApp automation covers what to automate first.
- Opt-in and campaign sending. Consent, segments and what a send costs are on broadcasts.
- One place for the team to answer. Seats, assignment and handover are on shared inbox, instead of one phone passed around the counter.
A verified badge on a number nobody answers is worth nothing. A fast reply without a badge still wins the sale.
What we promise, and what we do not
Zappio submits the green tick application on your behalf and follows it up with Meta. Zappio cannot guarantee Meta's decision, because nobody can. Any provider that guarantees the badge is either guessing or misleading you, and that promise is the clearest warning sign in this market.
Zappio is made by TABSYST, with offices in India and Dubai, and support runs in Gulf hours. Our numbers are on contact, and if you would rather someone ran your campaigns too, see WhatsApp marketing in Dubai.
